Brooke vets have been awarded a prestigious equine welfare scholarship, thanks to funding from a Trust which has donated over £10 million to charitable causes.

Dr Javaid Khan, Animal Healthcare Manager at Brooke Pakistan and Dr Dinesh Kumar Gupta, Programme Lead for Animal Health and Welfare at Brooke India, have been selected for the Sir Peter O’ Sullevan Equine Education Scholarship.

The scholarship, sponsored by the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, is part of Brooke’s commitment to improving health and welfare services for horses, donkeys and mules worldwide, by giving vets opportunities to enhance their skills.

Amy Barstow, Global Animal Health Advisor at Brooke, said: “We are very grateful to The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Trust for giving this learning opportunity to our overseas vets.

“Our scholars are committed to sharing their learning with their colleagues and beyond."

Both scholars are visiting the UK this September this month to attend the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Congress, one of the largest equine veterinary conferences outside of the USA.

“Ensuring our vets have the most up to date knowledge and skills means that we can do the best for the working horses and donkeys that we care for.”

Dr Javaid Khan and Dr Gupta represented Brooke and attended lectures at the BEVA Congress, held in the Arena and Convention Centre in Liverpool on 11-14 September 2024.

They also promoted Brooke’s programmatic work at the charity’s ‘Equine Fair’ exhibition stand.

The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust was formed in 1998 by BBC commentator, Sir Peter O’Sullevan, who was Brooke’s Patron until his death in 2015.

The Trust has donated over £1 million to Brooke to date, with Sir Peter visiting its work overseas and supporting fundraising appeals.

BEVA, Brooke and Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust have a historic relationship, with Brooke and Sir Peter awarded the BEVA Equine Welfare Award in 2005 and 2003 respectively.

Now in its 27th year, the Trust has also pledged support to charities including Blue Cross, World Horse Welfare and Compassion in World Farming
