Thanks to funding from the Petplan Charitable Trust, we developed a new Equine Welfare Assessment application for Android tablets. The app has been designed to Standardised Equine Based Welfare Assessment Tool (SEBWAT) to conduct assessments on animals, evaluate, and monitor equine welfare.

To help governments implement the OIE standards, technical experts from Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, The Donkey Sanctuary, The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) and World Horse Welfare will have a joint poster displayed at the 4th OIE Global Conference on Animal Welfare in Mexico.

For the first time, the contributions of working livestock including horses, donkeys and mules to food security and nutrition, has been officially recognised by the UN in livestock recommendations formally endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) on Monday 17 October 2016 in Rome.

In Ethiopia’s Halaba district, painful and unnecessary wounds caused by ill-fitting or poorly designed bits are common in the gharry horses. These horses pull gharries - carts or carriages used to transport people or goods.

In January 2016, animal health centres in Kofele Woreda, Ethiopia were destroyed during local protests. With the help of Brooke staff, the local community and government, animal health care services are resuming.
