Donkey slaughter and export

There are reports of donkeys being slaughtered and imported out of African countries to China.

Statement

As a global equine welfare charity, Brooke is very concerned about the growing number of reports of trade in donkey products, such as meat and hides, in several countries including Kenya, Senegal, Egypt and India. In fact, it has been banned recently in Senegal, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Irrespective of whether or not people agree with such donkey products, it is vital that the welfare of donkeys involved is properly addressed. Brooke does not accept and will work to address any activity or treatment that causes animal suffering, fear and distress during the transport, handling and slaughter process.

International Brooke teams are working together and speaking to governments and other stakeholders to gain a better understanding of the issues involved. We expect all parties involved to act responsibly and ensure that international standards and legislation are being fully respected. Brooke will use our expertise and relationships to work with the government and to help authorities monitor and enforce these standards.
