Annual report and accounts 2023/24

Review our performance in our latest annual report and accounts - 90 years of compassion.

We helped over 1.5 million working horses and donkeys directly, and 32.8 million indirectly.

In the second full year of our new strategy, we worked hard in a challenging year towards our three strategic goals.

90 Years of Compassion

2024 marked Brooke’s 90th anniversary. For almost a century, Brooke has been creating a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering and have a life worth living.

In our latest Annual Report for 2023/24, you can learn about how we directly helped over 1.5 million working horses, donkeys and mules – an increase from last year. We worked with 11,910 communities and almost three million people.

Also this year we’ve increased our indirect reach to a massive 32.8 million. This work includes our advocacy and policy work with governments and international organisations, and some of our training work. Most of this impact comes from the huge milestone we achieved in February 2024 - the ban on the donkey skin trade in Africa. Once this legislation is implemented in all countries, it will protect 32.6 million donkeys.

A growing movement for change

Every person working, supporting, trained and influenced by Brooke is a member of our movement for change. We all want to create a life worth living for working horses, donkeys and mules around the world. Every positive action takes us closer to our goal.

Tackling emergencies

Brooke is responding to the aftermath of a climate related emergency at least once a year. Working animals are critical for people’s survival, and in 2023/24 we continued to help communities prepare for and build resilience to emergencies. Brooke’s teams are ready to act, and in late 2023 when East Africa experienced its worst drought in 40 years, we provided relief to over 46,000 animals in the region.

Working towards our goals over the next year

Spending money wisely

We are truly privileged to have dedicated supporters who continue to support us even as living costs rise. In 2023/24 our income exceeded expectations, reaching £26.2m. Much of this was thanks to in gifts left to Brooke in Wills.

The Board and senior leadership team will make sure that our financial planning is prudent, whilst expanding our reach to new areas through new projects. We will prioritise the wellbeing of working horses, donkeys and mules, so that if our income is reduced, we can still deliver on vital programmes of work.

In 2024/25, we will continue to focus on handling training, harness improvements and farrier training. We’ll also continue to improve animal health systems so that horse and donkey owners have a local safety net, and work to improve far reaching animal welfare policy.

It’s thanks to you

In these challenging times, we are enormously thankful for the ongoing loyalty of every one of our supporters. It is only because you dedicate time, creativity and much-needed funds that we can ensure working horses, donkeys and mules around the world have a life worth living. Thank you for being part of our movement for change.
